Warwick —If you or someone you know is a U.S. veteran, then you will want to learn about the Veterans History Project of the Library of Congress. The Albert Wisner Public Library will conduct an information and training session for the project at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10, at Warwick Town Hall. There are 19 million war veterans living in the United States today, and every day we lose 1,600 of them. Motivated by the urgent need to collect the stories and experiences of war veterans while they are still among us, the United States Congress created the Veterans History Project. The Nov. 10 program provides an opportunity for Warwick community members to play a role in the preservation of these stories. Participants will learn important lessons from the rich, historical resource we have in our military veterans and civilians, who served in support of a war effort. The program will include: a short video about the Veterans History Project, a live demonstration interview, and a discussion of the steps for interviewing and submitting materials to the Library of Congress. Field kits issued by the Library Congress for the project will be distributed at the event. Also speaking at the event are Mary Makofske and Meg Cooke. They will present VetsWrite, a program of the Orange County Arts Council where several writers work with veterans interested in writing about their experiences. As an official partner, The Albert Wisner Public Library will forward interviews and materials collected to the Library of Congress Veterans Memory Project for archiving. Everyone knows a war veteran or someone who served on the home front. We owe it to them and to generations to come to preserve their stories. This is a wonderful opportunity for veterans and interviewers to make history. To register call the library at 986-1047 ext. 3.
