Laketha Costello attends National Young Leaders Conference

Warwick - Laketha Costello, a junior at Warwick Valley High School, participated in the 2006 National Young Leaders Conference in Washington D.C. This program is a non-profit organization established in 1985 to work with selected students by helping them achieve their leadership potential. Over the course of the trip, Laketha attended several different functions, which included a presentation on the floor of the House of Representatives, a tour of the Supreme Court and a panel discussion with prominent journalists at the National Press Club. She also was able to encounter an actual briefing conducted by a senior member of the President’s Administration. Costello also took part in the Model Congress, which allowed students to experience first-hand what it is like to be a U.S. Representative. During this part of the program, Costello and the others in the Young Leaders Conference were taught how to debate, amend and the vote on proposed mock legislation. Back home, Costello has been inducted into the National Honors Society, is a member of the National Society of High School Scholars, has her name in the Who’s Who Among American High School Scholars and is a scholar athlete. She also is vice president for the junior class and is enjoying her sixth year playing violin in the orchestra and singing in the select women’s chorus.
