Japanese youth exchange program seeks host families
Middletown In July 2006, for the fifth year, Japanese youth will travel to the Hudson Valley to begin a month-long stay. The visit promises to bring a lifetime of memories for themselves as well as their hosts. Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H in Dutchess, Columbia and Orange counties has been working with the LEX organization in Japan to develop the international exchange program for youth in New York and Japan. The two groups have been working together for more than 20 years. In 2005, nine Japanese youth visit the Hudson Valley. Hosting an international exchange student is a way to learn about the world, and to create a new friendship. According to Bruce Keith, a 4-H volunteer from Highland Falls, “The program offers families an opportunity to learn about a culture different from their own, and experience the world beyond New York.” Exchange participants absorb the customs and characteristics of the host culture by taking part in daily life activities, and by spending time with a host brother or sister. Host families need only to have a desire to make their exchange partner a part of the family while staying in their home. A volunteer coordinating committee has been established, and is meeting regularly to plan details, including interviews of potential host families and orientation for both hosts and Japanese students.
