January rainbow

Rainbows in winter are a rare treat. This photo shows a rainbow arcing over the Hudson Highlands on Saturday. When sunlight strikes rain, spray, or fog, the observer standing between the sun and the water drops may see a rainbow suddenly appear. This will happen only in the early morning or late afternoon, when the sun is close to the horizon. (Photo by Pam Chegotis)
