WARWICK — Every year, diabetes kills 180,000 Americans. The disease dramatically increases the risk of heart attack, and is a leading cause of blindness, kidney failure and amputations. This January, St. Anthony Community Hospital will open a Center for Diabetes Education. The new center will be staffed with certified diabetes educators, registered dieticians and registered nurses, trained to provide specialized care and education for those living with diabetes, as well as their families. All programs and services will be conducted under the advisement of board-certified medical doctors and healthcare professionals. In partnership with the patient and his or her physician, the center will offer a wide variety of programs and services. “The mission of our diabetes outpatient education program is to be the center of excellence in outpatient diabetes education and management in Southern Orange and Northern Sussex Counties,” said Leah Cerkvenik, executive vice president and administrator of St. Anthony Community Hospital. The hospital is a non-profit acute care hospital providing emergency, medical, surgical, and obstetrical and gynecological acute care services to residents of southern Orange County in New York, and Passaic and Sussex Counties in New Jersey.
