Goodwill Ladies Auxiliary sponsoring blood drive Sept. 13
Warwick - Warwick residents Simone Schultz, 4, and Roy Chelsen, a New York City firefighter and 9/11 first responder, need your help. Next Thursday evening, Sept. 13, the Good Will Hook & Ladder Ladies Auxiliary will sponsor a blood drive from 5-9 p.m. at the Warwick Fire Department’s Station #1 on Church Street Extension. The blood drive, held in cooperation with the New York Blood Center, is being held in remembrance of the victims and survivors of the September 11th terrorist attacks. Posters for the event also honor Roy Chelsen, 46, a cancer patient diagnosed with myeloma and who is currently undergoing treatments that depend on blood transfusions, and Simone Schultz, 4, the daughter of Jeremy and Vicky Schultz of Warwick. Simone, who recently returned from a “Make a Wish” trip to Disney World, is a leukemia patient and blood recipient. “We selected Roy and Simone to appear on our posters,” said Kim Corkum, president of the Goodwill Hook & Ladder Ladies Auxiliary, “to put a face on our blood drive. We want people to realize that not only can you save a life with your blood donation but it could be the life of your neighbor or someone close to you.” Equipment also will be available for those who wish to make red cell donations. The Alyx machine used for this purpose returns the plasma, which contains all the donor’s vitamins, minerals and nutrients, is returned along with saline solution. Appointments are suggested but walk-ins are welcomed. Call Heather Gardner at 986-0573.
