Going fishin'

Rod & Gun Club’s annual Kid’s Fishing Day set for May 6 WARWICK - Now we know it really must be spring. On Saturday, May 6, the Warwick Valley Rod & Gun Club, incorporated in 1945, will again stock approximately 500 trout in Wawayanda Creek on Baird Farm. The picturesque farm on Baird’s Lane near Sanfordville Road in Warwick has often served as a backdrop for television and print media commercials. A week from this Saturday it will be the site of the club’s annual “Take a Kid Fishing Day,” open to young anglers, ages five to 14, who live in the Town of Warwick. The event, organized by club members for youngsters accompanied by their parents or guardians, is provided for those boys and girls who do not have access to a stream or the opportunity to enjoy the wildlife and environment surrounding their community. Kid’s Fishing Day will be held between 9 a.m. to noon. Each child is instructed to bring his or her own fishing tackle. A child, however, does not have to catch a fish to win one of the prizes awarded at the close of the event. Since it is not a contest, it has been the practice for the Club to award a prize to each participating child, whether the child has caught a fish or not. In the past, the prizes have included fishing rod and reel combos, tackle boxes, lures and other outdoor recreation items not necessarily related to fishing. In recent years, as a result of the growth of the community, attendance at this event has grown dramatically. More than 200 youngsters participated last year. In large measure, the success of this event has been due to the support of individuals and local retailers who donate cash or articles which are related to fishing or the outdoors in general. As usual, The Warwick Advertiser will be on hand to photograph the event. Among many other subjects, we will be looking for the smallest kid with the biggest fish.
