Library will use $15,000 state grant to expand book and DVD collections Florida - The Florida Public Library will use a $15,000 grant secured through the efforts of state Sen. Thomas Morahan, R- New City, to purchase a new collection of books and DVDs and to launch a series of book discussions and movie days using a new big screen. “The library is the only source for movies in the village,” Library Director Madelyn Folino said. “And demand continues to soar, while circulation of books is lagging. Patrons are often surprised to learn that a favorite movie is based on a book. On the other hand, avid readers tend to claim that the book is always better than the film. We plan to purchase both formats of the same story and encourage users to compare different art forms.” The library is soliciting Florida residents’ help in building the new collection. Titles may be adult fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, classics or juvenile selections. DVDs will range from feature, foreign and animated films to documentaries, HBO specials and PBS series based on a single book or a series by the same author. Book and film lovers with suggestions may fill out a form at the circulation desk, call the library at 845-651-7659 or e-mail them to fpl@rcls.org. Volunteers interested in leading book discussions or introducing movies are welcome. “Under the Tuscan Sun” by Frances Mayes will be the subject of an adult book discussion on Wednesday, Nov. 15, at 6:30 p.m. The movie of the same name will be shown on Sunday, Nov. 19, at 2 p.m.
