From one group of Wildcats to another
Pine Island Elementary students host benefit concert Dec. 1 for kids in Louisiana Warwick - For the past two months, students at Pine Island Elementary have given up one recess period a week to research the music, dance, food and culture of New Orleans, Mississippi and Alabama, all parts of the country where so much was lost in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. All that research comes together for an evening of entertainment on Thursday, Dec. 1, when the entire school presents its C.P. R. (Children Participate in Relief) benefit concert at 7 p.m. in the Warwick High School auditorium. The C.P.R concert, said Principal Jane Hamburger, will show that “kids have the ability to help other kids.” Whatever money is raised next Thursday evening will be used to purchase textbooks and school supplies for children at Woodmere Elementary School in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, which lost everything in the flooding of New Orleans. Pine Island students selected Woodmere Elementary because the two schools have the same mascot - a Wildcat, Hamburger said. In addition to the funds for the supplies, the Pine Island Wildcats will be sending a DVD of the show, along with their words of support to the Woodmere Wildcats The suggested donation is $3 per person. Pine Island’s Sweet Peas & Dirt Club also will be preparing a regional food tasting. Call Pine Island School at 987-3190 for ticket information. There also will be limited tickets at the door. Parking is free; follow the signs to the right of the main entrance.
