Four-way stop to be installed at Third-South-Park Way
Warwick No one objected and everyone who discussed it thought it was a no-brainer: The village will install two additional stop signs on South Street, at the intersections of Third and Park Way, in an effort to keep motorists from speeding through this kid-friendly neighborhood. Michele DeLaura, who lives on South Street, called the situation “urgent.” ”The board needs to address the urgent need for a four-way stop here,” DeLaura said. “There was an accident this morning. Motorists do not slow down for pedestrians. There is the park program in the summer and sledding in winter. It is a year-round problem.” Her neighbor, Delores Murphy, has lived on this busy street for six years. “People fly around me,” she said. “I have tremendous concern for our children’s safety. It won’t take much money. If we can put beautiful planters and flowers on Main Street, we can do this. People totally disregard the speed limit.” And the board agreed. “The consensus of this board is to make this a four-way stop,” said Mayor Michael Newhard. “We look at it as a tremendous safety issue. We’ve looked at it before and didn’t do anything. We decided to revisit it.” Newhard said this is a multi-use area. The park gets a huge amount of play, with the summer program held there, as well as older kids playing basketball. Families, especially young families, go to the park throughout the year. South Street is one of the many long, straight streets in the village that just invites drivers to speed. From Main Street all the way to Galloway Road/Route 17A, there are no stops along the way. Two years ago the village installed stop signs on Forester Avenue in both directions, near Park Avenue School for the same reason.
