Florida - Children’s Book Week, May 2 to May 8, is the national celebration since 1919 of books and reading for youth. It is a time to celebrate books and reading in classrooms, libraries, bookstores and homes. This year, the Florida Public Library will celebrate Children’s Book Week with visits from two Hudson Valley authors. On Tuesday, May 3, from 4 to 5 p.m., kids in grades K through 5 are invited to meet children’s book author Pamela Schembri, who is also an enchanting storyteller and a school librarian. She will offer tips to young readers and aspiring authors on how to tell their own stories and discuss the steps she uses to compose her books. Schembri’s books, “The Secret Lunch Special,” “No More Pumpkins” and “The Veteran’s Day Visitor” are available for checkout now. Fans of the Junie B. Jones and Polk Street School series will enjoy Schembri’s funny and familiar stories of life in elementary school. On Wednesday, May 4, from 4 to 5 p.m., the library will be transformed into a teen book café when author Susan Beth Pfeffer visits with young adults in grades 6 and up. Pfeffer is a New York Times bestselling author widely known for young adult science fiction, especially her popular apocalyptic novel series, “The Last Survivors,” which includes the paperback trilogy “Life As We Knew It,” ”The Dead and the Gone” and “This World We Live In,” chronicling the collision of a meteor with the moon and the catastrophic effects on earthly life which result. Teen readers will be fascinated by the life and death challenges her characters face when life changes overnight.
