Florida Public Library announces fall programs
Florida - Registration for fall programs at the Florida Public Library, located at 4 Cohen Circle in the Village of Florida, begins on Friday, Sept. 1. All programs are open to residents of the Florida School District. Sign up for programs in person or by calling 651-7659. Non-residents may register for programs as space allows. Sunday hours, which ended in June 2005 due to budget cuts, have been restored this year. Starting Sept. 10, the library will be open on Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. Children’s programs Fall programs begin on Tuesday, Sept. 12 ,with “Books & Beyond,” an after school drop-in program for grades K-5 at 4 p.m. No registration is required for this program which will feature a different activity each week. On Sept. 12, Pam Golben of the Museum of the Hudson Highlands will present Amazing Dragonflies. On Sept. 19, kids will make a grass house that grows and on Sept. 26 they will create greeting cards with pressed flowers. A “Grab Bag Craft” day for this age group will also be held on Saturday, Sept. 16, at 2 p.m. with advance registration required for this choose your own craft program. Preschool programs with Miss Maria begin on Wednesday, Sept., 13 and Thursday, Sept., 14. Rhymetime for toddlers age 18-35 months, with a parent or caregiver participating, are scheduled for 10 a.m. Story time for ages 3-5 (not yet in Kindergarten) and on their own are at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays. A responsible adult must remain on library premises while the latter program is in session. Only children registered will be admitted to the programs. Young adults Young Adult programs for students in grades 6-12 also start on Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m. Upcoming activities include making baked apple turnovers on Sept. 12, funky necklaces on Sept. 19 and the monthly meeting of the Anime & Manga Club on Sept. 26. The Teen Advisory Group (T.A.G.) meets on Saturday, Sept. 9, at noon for pizza and a planning session on future programs. On Saturday, Sept. 23, teens and adults are invited to a Watercolor Workshop at 2 p.m. with staff artist Pat Foxx. Materials will be provided. Adult programming The Black Dirt Storytelling Guild holds its regular meeting on Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. with stories for adults over the age of sixteen. The evening’s theme is “Three,” a popular number in traditional folktales. The monthly Knitting Circle returns on Monday, Sept. 18, at 6 p.m. Crochet lovers are welcome, too. On Wednesday, Sept. 20, there will be a book discussion at 6:30 p.m. of Tracy Chevalier’s “Girl With a Pearl Earring,” followed by a Dutch tile painting workshop on Sunday, Sept. 24, at 2 p.m. On Wednesday, Sept. 27, adults are invited to an organizing workshop with expert Lisa Montanaro at 6 p.m. She will offer practical solutions to cleaning up your clutter. Anniversary celebrations September is library card sign up month and all new cardholders will be eligible for a prize drawing at the library’s 48th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, Sept. 30. The Friends of the FPL will hold a used book sale from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. A scarecrow judging contest for all ages will be featured at noon. Make a scarecrow (any size) at home with family, friends or your team or scout group. Bring it to the library by 11:30 a.m. for judging. The top three scarecrow creators will win prizes. Library cards will be presented to new cardholders in kindergarten and everyone is invited to have refreshments to celebrate the library’s birthday. The celebration continues on Sunday, Oct. 1, at noon with part two of the popular Florida: “Then and Now” presentation by members of the Florida Historical Society. Bob Scott will show historical postcards of local scenes and photos of the same places today. Newcomers and long timers are all invited to make their best guesses about the pictures and put in their two cents in a lively discussion. At 1 p.m., Friends of the FPL will sponsor an antiques appraisal session with expert John Fish. Bring your mystery object (portable size only) and have its value appraised for $5 or three objects for $10. Volunteers interested in working on the book sale are asked to contact Friends president Donna Dellatto at 651-2636. Teens are invited to help earn community service hours by setting up and breaking down the sale. Letters verifying hours worked will be issued to each student.
