Florida library offers new programs in April
Florida - The Florida Public Library has a lineup of new programs for April. For information or to register, stop into the library or call 651-7659. Programs for Preschoolers Preschool programs will run for six weeks from April 11-12 through May 16-17. The child must be the indicated age by the date of the first program. Rhymetime is a program for toddlers (18-35 months) with a parent or caregiver and includes reading, songs, rhymes and a simple craft. Choose either Wednesday or Thursday at 10:30 a.m. This is a new time. Parents will need to make other arrangements for siblings. Storytime is a program for preschoolers (3-5 years) on their own that includes books, stories, music, games and a craft to take home. Parents must remain on the premises of the library during the program. Choose Wednesday or Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Programs for kids in grades K-5 On Saturday, April 7 at 2 p.m., as part of the ongoing Page to Screen program, the movie “Matilda,” based on the book by Roald Dahl will be shown in the children’s room at 2 p.m. on the big screen. Popcorn and juice will be provided. Copies of the book are available for check-out. Children need not have read the book to attend the movie. Books & Beyond is a drop-in program on Tuesday afternoons at 4 p.m. for kids in K-5. On April 10, kids are invited to bring two of their favorite stuffed animals and participate in “the Pets on Parade.” On April 17, the topic will be about dogs and how they communicate with each other and with humans. On April 24, the discussion will be about cats. On Saturday, April 21 at 2 p.m., welcome Spring by decorating a flower pot and listen to books with special storybook gardens. Programs for Young Adults YA Discovery is a program on Tuesday evenings for young adults in grade 6 and up. On April 10 at 6:30 p.m., the subject will be facials. Learn to care for teenage skin and sample a variety of products. On April 17 and 24, the ABCs of money management will begin at 6 p.m. for teens. On Saturday, April 28 at 2 p.m., the library will provide a small cake for each young adult who signs up for its cake decorating class. Learn the basics of decorating a cake for holidays and other special occasions. Programs for Adults (age 16 & over): On Monday evenings, Ed Dubin hosts the Chess Club for Adults from 6 to 7:30 p.m. On Wednesday, April 11 at 6:30 p.m., the ABCs of Money Management program with financial educator Daisy Badillo will begin with a session for parents. Learn how to teach teens to make sound financial decisions. Space is limited, so please call today to reserve your space and free workbook. The Black Dirt Storytelling Guild holds a storytelling circle on the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. The Guild is dedicated to preserving and promoting the art of storytelling and story listening. This month’s theme on April 12 is transformations. On Friday, April 13, the library will host the Poetry Café at 7 p.m. Local published poet Robert Milby will recite original poetry and emcee the evening with featured poets Barbara Adams, Rhodora Penaranda and other guests. There will be an open mic hour. Desserts and coffee will be available. This program is free and for adults (age 16 and over) only. The Knitting Circle meets Monday, April 16, at 6 p.m. Expert Siw Fritsch will be on hand to teach the basics or help you with your project. Crocheters are welcome, too! On Wednesday, April 18, at 6:30 p.m., the library will host a book discussion of “How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accen,” the novel by Julia Alvarez about four sisters and their family learning to become American after fleeing the Dominican Republic in the 1960s. Copies of the book are available now. On Sunday, April 22, at 2 p.m., the library will host a “Scrapbooking Extravaganza;” patrons need to bring their own supplies. A special showing of “The Queen” will take place on Wednesday, April 25 at 6 p.m. on the library’s big screen. This is an up-close drama of the British royal family after the untimely death of Princess Diana. Refreshments will be provided and there will be a short discussion following the movie. Family Programs On Saturday, April 14, Poet Robert Milby will be on hand for “Sundaes on Saturday” at 2 p.m. to help participants write poems about sundaes. There will be ice cream and all the trimmings available to inspire poetry. This is a poetry workshop for all ages. Meetings The Board of Trustees of the Florida Public Library meets on the first Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the library. The public is welcomed and encouraged to attend. The Friends of the Florida Public Library will meet April 9 at 7 p.m. in the library. The Friends help raise funds for the library’s programs and purchases. New members are always welcome.
