Families find a cause for holidays
Safe Homes’ Gingerbread House Contest Washingtonville St. Anne’s Episcopal Church will host and sponsor Safe Homes’ Gingerbread House Contest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, at 175 E. Main St., Route 94, in Washingtonville. This first-time fundraising event is the result of a growing holiday tradition, started by local Washingtonville families and their friends. While seeking a sponsor and more adequate space for their very popular competition, enthusiasts saw the opportunity to incorporate the season’s spirit of giving into the contest. In line with their theme, the group elected to build their gingerbread houses to benefit Safe Homes, and the families it serves seeking a safe home, free of violence and abuse. Suggested donations of $14 and $20 include a small or large Gingerbread House Kit and a contribution to the fight against domestic violence in Orange County. Gingerbread house artist Bill Bell of Newburgh has donated a Victorian master-piece to be auctioned at the event and inspire contenders. Safe Homes is the county’s only non-profit agency fully dedicated to the elimination of domestic violence through comprehensive services to survivors, and programs for the increase of public awareness and education on domestic violence issues. Reservations are suggested. For information and directions, call 845-496-3961.
