Election time in the village
March 18 election will seat two trustees Warwick Two seats on the Village of Warwick Board of Trustees will be up for grabs this year and at least one incumbent won’t be seeing reelection. Roger Metzger, an 11-year veteran of the board, announced at the board’s last meeting in 2007 that he would not be running in the upcoming election. “You have been just an extraordinary partner, a great person to go to and confide in and seek some wisdom,” said Mayor Michael Newhard, who has named Metzger deputy mayor every year he himself has served as mayor. Town of Warwick Supervisor Michael Sweeton tipped his hat to Metzger as well. “He is a gentleman and an honorable man, and there aren’t too many of those around,” said Sweeton. The other seat up for grabs is held by Bill Iurato, who has been a member of the board since 2000. As of Monday night, he said he was undecided as to whether he would seek reelection. Anyone wishing to run may get an independent nominating petition from the Village Clerk. After collecting 100 signatures, petitions may be filed between Feb. 5 and 12. The election will be held on March 18 from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Goodwill Hook and Ladder Company on Church Street Extension. The two trustee seats are for terms of four years. In addition to serving Warwick as a trustee, Metzger was formerly a member of the village Planning Board for 15 years. He is currently the village’s shade tree commissioner; he was one of the original members of the Shade Tree Commission, which was formed in 1966.
