Eagle Scout project collects ten tons at computer recycling day

Warwick - More than 200 people disposed of more than 900 old, unwanted computers and related components as part of a recycling day organized by Ben Hutchison of Troop 45 as an Eagle Scout service project at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Sponsored by the Town of Warwick, the event was the first of its kind held in the area. The items, weighing nearly ten tons, will be transported by the Orange County Department of Public Works’ Division of Environmental Services and Facilities to an upstate company where they will be recycled in an environmentally safe manner, according to Hutchison. He organized the efforts of troop members, leaders and parents, working closely with Barbara Conklin of the Orange County DPW Division of Environmental Services and Facilities. Troop 45 project advisors included Scoutmaster Dan Miller, Committee Chair Clayton Eurich and former Scoutmaster Tom Fivehouse. Troop 45 is sponsored by Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Hutchison is the son of Evan and Louise Hutchison of Warwick. In his senior year, he participated in the New Vision Engineering honors program. This summer, he was selected as one of two New York State representatives at the three-week National Youth Science Camp in West Virginia. He was a coxswain for the high school Crew team, a member of the National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, Math Honor Society and was a National Merit Scholarship Commended Student. He will attend Brown University to study mechanical engineering and computer science.
