WARWICK —David Markiewicz, a member of Boy Scout Troop 152 in Chester, recently completed his Eagle Project, building a set of outdoor benches for residents of Schervier Pavilion, a skilled nursing facility on the Warwick Campus of the Bon Secours Charity Health System. The benches are now part of the new garden, created by volunteers on the staff of the pavilion. David, the son of Thomas and Susan Markiewicz of Chester, is a senior at Chester Academy and a candidate for the rank of Eagle. Only about two percent of all scouts attain this rank, the highest one awarded in scouting. All candidates for Eagle Scout are required to complete a community project. “I got the idea for my Eagle project after another scout in my troop, Fred Salamone, finished his project building raised bed gardens at Mt. Alverno Center,” explained David. “He then put me in touch with Schervier Pavilion Admissions Coordinator Betty Tiedemann, who had inquired about any other scouts that needed a project for Eagle. She was looking for someone to build benches for a new garden.” He said he needed a project and was up to the task. The wood was purchased with contributions and proceeds from fundraising efforts by the staff at Schervier Pavilion. David also managed to get a generous donation from Roe Brothers Lumber in the Village of Florida. With the help of other scouts in his troop and the use of a scout leader’s workshop, David cut, sanded, drilled, and routed for five to six hours a week and then stained and delivered the benches. “This was a wonderful project,” said Schervier Pavilion Administrator Michael Deyo, “and we are grateful to the Boy Scouts and Scoutmasters of Troop 152 for donating their time and talents to building these beautiful benches that everyone here can enjoy for years to come.” Additional information about Schervier Pavilion, Mount Alverno Center, Day-At-A-Time and St. Anthony Community Hospital is available on the Web at www.StAnthonyCommunityHosp.org.
