Warwick — Keene Publishing of Warwick will publish “Pirate’s Alphabet,” a children’s alphabet picture book about pirates written by Patti Wigington and illustrated by Kit Umscheid. In addition to teaching the letters of the alphabet to children ages 2-6, “Pirate’s Alphabet” takes readers on a journey through historical pirate lore with a geography lesson, including references to Hispaniola and Davy Jones’ Locker. Readers join the pirate captain and his ragtag gang as they travel from one port to another, hunting for treasure and trying to avoid capture. A glossary is included for expanding the adventure and a teacher’s guide is available free of charge at www.keenebooks.com. A sample of the text: D is for Daring n a pirate must be brave When swimming ashore, or exploring a cave. D stands for Dashing, and Danger that’s near, And Davy Jones’ Locker, a place pirates fear. “After seeing the first Disney ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movie, Wigington found that she was teaching the alphabet to her youngest by expanding upon the pirate lore of the movie,” states Diane Tinney, publisher and founder of Keene Publishing. “Reading is something that families can do together, and learning can be entertaining as well as educational. The author wanted to combine all those aspects and hopes her book will appeal to children, parents, grandparents, librarians, and teachers alike.” The rhymes of the book are designed to entertain and amuse young readers. Kit Umscheid’s watercolor illustrations incorporate all the ideas found in the text into the pictures, and her illustrations follow everything the pirates are seeing and experiencing. “She’s really captured the sense of playfulness of the pirates as well as bringing depth and feeling to them,” explains Tinney.
