Warwick — When asked how many people showed up at the Tuscan Café for the Warwick Democratic Committee’s “Meet & Greet,” Irene Schacher laughed. “I don’t really know,” she said. “I stopped counting at 35.” The Sunday, May 7, event was an informal reception to welcome new democrats to Warwick, and reconnect with old friends. Some of the guests were newcomers to the community, some were young people newly eligible to vote, and some were citizens who had recently switched voter registration from either republican or independent. Ben Shuldiner and Judy Aydelott, two candidates vying for the 19th congressional seat, made an appearance, as did Elaine Slobod, who is seeking election to the Orange County Supreme Court, and Village Judge Richard Farina, who is running for Orange County Judge. On hand were many members of the local committee, including co-chairs Steve Carras and Dawn Trone, and co-chairs of the public relations subcommittee, Irene Schacher and Michelle Desveaux. Warwick Mayor Michael Newhard, who was accompanied by his son Henry, welcomed everyone. He pointed out how Warwick is an involved, active community, and cautioned listeners about the promises and challenges of growth. Michael Edelstein spoke about sustainability, emphasizing the importance of land preservation, and growth that can improve Warwick’s strengths and self-reliance. He noted that it is critical for democrats to stay focused on the upcoming mid-term elections. Edelstein, a professor of environmental psychology at Ramapo College, was the democratic candidate for Orange County executive in 2005. The Warwick committee, which meets the first Tuesday of each month at the Tuscan Café, encourages all democrats to “save the date” and participate.
