Warwick — Those eligible for Village of Warwick tax exemptions must file their request by Dec. 31. The village has had an exemption for veterans as well as for seniors. Earlier this year, the village joined the Town of Warwick and Orange County by instituting an exemption for volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers. Volunteers who meet the requirements, which include owning the property and belonging to the volunteer group for at least five years, must file their request with both the town and the village. The village deadline is Dec. 31; the town is March. Those requesting exemptions do not have to come in person, according to Village Trustee George McManus. It can be done by mail. The tax assessor’s office is planning to send out notification to those who are eligible. In other action business at Monday’s Village Board meeting: • Trustees decided to pay for Port-a-Potties for groups who use the pavilion at Veteran’s Memorial Park until Dec. 31. With the relocation of the pavilion, the bathrooms are up a hill and at a distance from the new pavilion. Village officials consider it a safety and convenience issue. So, if requested by the applicant, the village will pay the tab for a Port-a-Potty to sit closer to the pavilion. • County Legislator Ben Winstanley, R-Greenwood Lake, informed Mayor Michael Newhard that the village will receive “the lion’s share” of what village officials applied for from the county’s Housing and Urban Development grant program. Over the past four years, the village has revitalized sidewalks and drainage systems in several neighborhoods, including Van Buren, Howe, Factory and most recently Division Street. This year’s grant will go to install new sidewalks on John Street, which will be the final leg of this four-year project. • The next Village Board meeting will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 5, because of the Labor Day holiday.
