Credit union offers scholarship
Middletown Hudson Heritage Federal Credit Union is offering local high school students who will be entering college a chance to win a scholarship to help finance their education. The credit union is participating in a statewide scholarship program that will offer Hudson Heritage members the chance to win scholarships to either a two- or four-year accredited educational institution. To be eligible, students must be high school seniors, attending college for the first time in the fall of 2006, with an unweighted GPA of 90 or more for grade 9 through grade 12 (first semester), and members of Hudson Heritage Federal Credit Union. Students will be competing against other credit union members across the state, and will be judged based on their academic achievements, extracurricular and community activities, and the quality of a written essay. Last year, the New York State Credit Union League awarded $19,000 in scholarships through this program, and members who participated through Hudson Heritage were awarded a total of $3,000. “By offering this scholarship, we hope to make a small contribution towards promoting higher education in the area,” says Virginia Wilson, president of Hudson Heritage. “These students will grow up, build businesses, create jobs, and contribute to the community. Eventually, we will all reap the benefits.” Credit unions are not-for-profit, financial cooperatives owned by their members. The New York State Credit Union League and affiliates serves New York credit unions, which have assets of more than $36 billion and more than 4.1 million members.
