Cornell Cooperative Extension offers fall parenting programs

    Middletown — Parenting is not an easy task and children don’t come with directions. Cornell Cooperative Extension offers the following parenting programs for parents and caregivers with children of all ages. Strengthening Families is free, fun-filled, positive, seven-week series designed to help parents/caregivers and their youth, ages 10-14, to strengthen communication, work through problems together and develop peer resistance skills. The series will be held at Middletown High School, Gardner Avenue Extension, Middletown, beginning Oct. 5 from 5:45-8:45 p.m. Priority is given to Middletown City School District residents. A parent-only information meeting will take place on Sept. 28. Discipline is Not a Dirty Word is a fun and interactive series to help parents and caregivers to learn and practice seven easy tools for positive and persuasive discipline in a warm and friendly way. Sites include Park Avenue Elementary School, 10 Park Ave., Warwick, on Oct. 4, 11, 18 and 25 from 7-9 p.m. and Harriman Center, 9 North Main St., Harriman on Nov. 15, 22 and 29 and Dec. 6 from 6-8 p.m. $30 fee. What Do You Do With the Mad That You Feel? This new four-week series is designed to help parents and caregivers learn practical ways to help their children identify and manage their feelings and develop self control. ncludes simple strategies to address children’s anger and bullying issues. The program will be held at Cornell Cooperative Extension, 18 Seward Ave., Third Floor, Middletown, on Oct. 20 and 27 and Nov. 3 and 10 from 10 a.m.-noon. $30/fee. What Can You Do Today to Provide for Tomorrow? An attorney from Jacobowitz and Gubits will talk with parents and caregivers about a variety of important issues to help plan for future family security. Issues include estate planning strategies, wills, living trusts and guardianships, New York health care proxy law, power of attorney and living wills. The three-hour sessions will be held in two locations: Cornell Cooperative Extension, 18 Seward Ave. Third Floor, Middletown, on Oct. 25 from 6-9 p.m.; and King of Kings Lutheran Church, 543 Union Ave., New Windsor on Nov. 10 from 6-9 p.m. $15/fee.
