Montgomery —Orange County United Way held its annual service dinner March 15 at Anthony’s Pier 9 in New Windsor. Campaign Chair Thomas Weddell announced that the community raised $1,775,048 during the 2006-2007 campaign. A new award, the Profiles of Courage Award, was introduced this year to honor individuals who have shared their personal stories of triumph with United Way, in order to educate and inspire the community. Nancy Burlew was recognized for sharing the story of her daughter Meredith’s progress, which was made thanks to the services she received at Inspire: The CP Center. Adam Gleason was recognized for sharing his story of overcoming late-onset blindness, with the assistance of services provided by the Association for the Visually Impaired. During the dinner, The Spirit of Caring Award was presented to three companies with outstanding campaign successes; the Enlarged City School District of Middletown, Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, Inc., and Orange County Trust Company. Chester resident Marion S. Murphy’s “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” Award was presented to two individuals whose value of and concern for people are demonstrated through their vision, leadership, service and commitment to the community. Martin Harnick, retired History Department Chair for Middletown School District, United Way Board member, and long-time community volunteer was one of the award recipients. The second award went to Marian Schnecker, a volunteer “Big Sister” for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County. “I have been so enlightened this year about the community in which I’ve lived my entire life, by serving as Campaign Chair for Orange County United Way,” Weddell said. “I’ve met remarkable individuals who faced extremely challenging life circumstances, and courageously overcame daunting obstacles with the assistance of United Way funded programs. “I’m so engaged in the cause that I’ve re-upped to serve as campaign chair again next year,” he added.
