Two-time survivor is raising money for breast cancer research Chester — Laurie McDermott of Chester is looking for support for her upcoming participation in the “Breast Cancer 3-Day” in Chicago from Sept. 8 to 10. This 60-mile walk over three days raises funds for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, a project of the National Philanthropic Trust. McDermott is a two-time breast cancer survivor. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2003 and then again in April 2005. She completed chemotherapy in November and radiation in December. “I am doing very well, have an excellent prognosis, and am ready, willing and able to do what I can to raise funds for the cause and to ‘spread the word’ about the importance of early detection,” McDermott said. “I’ve been dubbed the ‘poster child’ for early detection and the importance of obtaining mammograms by my surgeon.” McDermott needs to raise at least $2,200 to participate in the event. Donations may be made out to “Breast Cancer 3-Day” and mailed in care of Laurie McDermott, P.O. Box 377, Sugar Loaf, N.Y. 10981. Donations can also be made via her personal fundraising page at www.The3Day.org.
