Goshen-Orange County Executive Edward A. Diana and Consumer Affairs Commissioner Charles Mitchell urge Orange County residents to be cautious this winter season if they need to use portable generators. This winter, as the cold slowly creeps over our county, please take caution if you find the need to use a generator in the event of a power outage. Remember, Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a colorless and odorless gas, it cannot be smelled or seen but the effects can be devastating. If the area is not properly ventilated the fumes can cause illness or even death! There are a few simple precautions you can take to keep yourself and your family safe. They include: 1. Install a battery operated CO alarm near the bedrooms 2. Never use a generator indoors or in a garage, carport or basement. 3. Put the generator outdoors away from doors, windows and vents. 4. Always read and follow the products directions and safety tips. The following are symptoms associated with Carbon Monoxide poisoning. 1. Headache 2. Confusion 3. Fatigue 4. Dizziness 5. Nausea/Vomiting 6. Seizures 7. Loss of Consciousness Remember, if you must use a generator, the rule of thumb is ventilation, ventilation, ventilation. For a safe winter season always practice Safety First. For more information contact the Orange County Department of Consumer Affairs at 291-2400 visit www.orangecountygov.com.
