By many accounts, St. Stephen's 10th Educational Trust party a huge success
WARWICK - The St. Stephen’s Educational Trust’s 10th annual cocktail party, a successful formula for a decade, proved that it has become a major fundraiser for the Warwick organization. Once again, the guests who came to the Landmark Inn, enjoyed an open bar, creative hors d’oeuvres and musical entertainment provided by nightclub style singer/pianist Richard Wiggins. The Master of Ceremonies for the 10th consecutive year was local radio and television personality Dick Wells. The Rev. Michael McLoughlin, pastor of the Church of St. Stephen, the First Martyr, gave the invocation, thanking the guests for their support. During the evening, Wells introduced the members of the Trust. And, in what was a surprise, co-chair of the party, Ann Vogel, presented Edward Scharfenberger with a special award for his 14 years as founder and president. Then, turning the tables, there was another surprise as co-chair Terry Gavan presented Vogel with an award for all her years of dedication as a member and past secretary of the Board of Trustees. “This is a wonderful organization,” said Vogel, founder of Warwick’s Nationwide Insurance Agency. “All my children graduated from St. Stephen’s - St. Edward’s Elementary School. And I’m proud to say that my daughter Ann Marie Moore, who now manages my firm, was a member of the school’s first graduating class.” The St. Stephen’s - St. Edward’s Educational Trust was created 14 years ago to help support educational programs at the tuition supported elementary school. Parents who choose to send their children to St. Stephen’s are also obligated to pay Warwick school taxes. The Educational Trust helps relieve some of that financial pressure by providing much-needed funds for additional equipment and materials. The organization has also developed a need based scholarship program. The party raised about $1,000. “I’m at a loss for words,” said Scharfenberger, “I never expected this award for myself. Our gratitude should go to you. Over the years, everyone here has been generous in lending support to this annual event and it has not gone unnoticed. That’s why we designate every year as Community Appreciation Night. I thank you all.”
