Bear robbed on Main Street

WARWICK - On Dec. 1, The Warwick Advertiser published a photograph and reported that The Inkwell had a bear outside its store at 46 Main St. The article went on to report that this bear was conducting a “bear drive” and asking for donations so that its furry friends at the Warwick Valley Humane Society’s Animal Shelter could enjoy the bare necessities this holiday season. The bear had a wooden tray tied around its neck and as expected, Warwick residents responded with typical generosity. Donations were totaling about $20-$25 per day. Sadly however, last Thursday evening, Dec. 7, one or more thieves stole the basket and all that day’s donations while store employees were busy helping shoppers. “This is like robbing the poor box,” said owner Carol Bartnowski. Anyone with any information about the theft is asked to call the Warwick Police at 986-3423 and The Inkwell at 986-6100. Bartnowski is also hoping that someone will find and return the wooden tray, which the thief most likely discarded.
