He has been self-employed as a commercial artist for over 35 years, working in Michigan and New Jersey. Much of the inspiration for his work came from his living on the Michigan lakefront. Johnston’s winning painting depicts a rural scene in the local New Jersey area. Winnie O’Dougherty, a long-time resident of Highland Lakes, N.J., won third place with her painting of a “Rainy Day in Warwick,” which depicts a scene on Church Street in the village.A graduate of the Pratt Institute, her diversified art career has included working as a commercial illustrator and teaching art in private schools. She approaches painting with the feel of realism often found when working directly from nature. Her paintings have graced three previous covers of the Warwick directory. The winning artwork will be on display in the lobby of WVT, 47 Main St., Warwick, during regular business hours until Dec. 8. The 2007 WVT Yellow Page Directory will be mailed in May.
