Warwick — June is the American Humane Association’s national Adopt-A-Cat Month, and the Warwick Valley Humane Society and American Humane Association are urging families to consider adopting a feline friend. Garfield, whose new movie, “Garfied: A Tale of Two Kitties,” opened nationwide on Saturday, June 17, is the spokescat for all those meowers who will make purr-fect companions. June is the busiest month in terms of the number of cats and kittens that arrive at shelters. “Some people may be surprised to find that cats are the most popular pet in America today,” said Suzyn Barron, Warwick society’s president. “If you want to find out what all the feline fuss is about, stop by the Warwick Animal Shelter during June. In celebration of Adopt-A-Cat Month, the Warwick Valley Humane Society has reduced it’s adoption fee for all adult cats. As our spokescat Garfield would say, ‘Put down that lasagna and adopt a cat!’” According to the association, there are a number of things families should consider when choosing to adopt a cat: Age: When considering the best age of a feline for you, determine whether your household is ready for a grown-up cat that will be occasionally playful or the constant playfulness that kittens are known for. Adult cats are often better suited to families with young children. Personality: A cat’s true personality may not come out until he has been in his new home for several weeks. Shy cats are best suited to quiet households, while kittens’ personalities are anyone’s guess. Coat: Decide if you want a long, medium or short hair cat. The longer the coat, the more brushing that is needed to prevent painful matting, and the more vacuuming. Nutrition and Health: Good nutrition and regular vet visits will keep your cat healthy and happy. Keeping cats indoors prevents injuries from accidents, fighting and illnesses. Keep the litter box clean and odor free. And make time to play with your feline everyday. It will be beneficial to you both. The shelter is located at 48 Public Works Dr. in Warwick.
