A high-flying flag

The world’s largest free-flying American flag hangs under the upper arch of the George Washington Bridge’s New Jersey tower on Sept. 11. The flag drapes vertically for 90 feet and flies freely, responding to breezes from the Hudson River or Palisades. The flag’s stripes are approximately five feet wide and the stars measure about four feet in diameter, according to the Port Authority of New York’s Web site. The flag also is flown on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day and Veterans Day.
