Poughkeepsie - Oakwood Friends School honored Warwick resident Jonathan Talbot, class of 1957, with the 2007 Distinguished Alumni Award on Alumni Day, May 12, in recognition of his career as an internationally known artist and for his service to the school. After a successful career in the music business, Talbot began his career as a visual artist in 1971 after a course at the San Francisco Academy of Art. A painter, printmaker and collage artist, Talbot’s works have been exhibited at the National Academy and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His art has represented the United States overseas in exhibitions sponsored by the State Department and the Smithsonian Institution and is included in museum collections in the United States and Europe. Talbot also is the author of two books: “Collage, A New Approach” and “The Artist’s Marketing & Action Plan Workbook.” In his remarks, Oakwood Head of School Peter F. Baily said: “As an artist who explores contemporary issues through his work, Jonathan believes in participating in the life of his community. He took a leadership role in his home town of Warwick by working to prevent the disposal of radium in the Orange County watershed and later credited Oakwood for having nurtured the seeds of individual strength and commitment and for pointing him in the way of non-violence and social and environmental awareness. “The entire Talbot family also believes in giving back,” Bailey added. “Jonathan and his wife Marsha are dedicated members of Oakwood’s Ten Year Honor Roll which recognizes their many years of support to the Annual Fund. As parents of Loren, class of 1991, and Garret, class of 1995, they were active volunteers supporting the mission of the school.” Founded in 1796, Oakwood Friends School is New York State’s oldest co-educational boarding and day school.
