Cornwall-on-Hudson - Alison Roy, chemistry and science teacher for the Storm King School, has been accepted into the prestigious Klingenstein Summer Institute. Dedicated to connecting with young teachers at the advent of their careers and encouraging their continued growth of subject mastery, judgment, intuition, and creativity, each year the institute picks 75 students to attend for two weeks in the summer, beginning in mid-June. Master teachers and leaders in the field of education mentor the young teachers; the younger teachers read and discuss educational articles, are lectured by educational leaders, and work on projects that are specific to their teaching assignments. Few opportunities rival this prestigious program’s fully funded program. Klingenstein Fellows are lodged on the campus of The Lawrenceville School, in Lawrenceville, N.J., a restful location, but no distraction to their days packed with seminars, special readings, and guest lectures. Roy, also a certified chiropractor and a graduate of the Texas Chiropractic College, is enthusiastic about teaching and her future in teaching. In an effort to make her classes compelling and interesting she describes using the Socratic method: “Instead of just presenting material, I pose questions to my students to keep them thinking actively. I often have each student write an answer to my question before calling on someone to answer it aloud. I often ask for two or three possible responses to a question so that when a student gives one answer, the other students will continue to think instead of shutting down.” Helen S. Chinitz, Head of School, said Roy’s cceptance into the program speaks to the quality not only of School’s curriculum, but of its teachers, as well.
