Seward Class of 1984 celebrates 30th reunion

FLORIDA — It's been 30 years since the 1984 class of S.S. Seward Institute in the Village of Florida graduated and 10 years since it held it's last reunion weekend.

Last August, Class of 1984 President Dave Osczepinski, Terri Lenz Cole and Chris Pawelski began planning for the 30th reunion events.

"The first step was choosing the date," said Pawelski. "And we quickly settled on the weekend of August 8-11, so as to coincide with The Florida Family Fun Fest.

"The next step was the creation of a closed group Facebook page devoted to our class and the reunion," Pawelski added. "We added all class members on Facebook to the page and began discussing possible locations and activities."

Following a suggestion by Christine Plock Rudy, they settled on an informal meeting at Kelly Jeans in Goshen on Friday night, Aug. 8, and a sit down buffet dinner at Silvio's Italian Villa in Warwick on Saturday night, Aug. 9.

"Sixteen classmates met up at Kelly Jeans and 18 classmates attended the dinner on Saturday, many bringing their spouses and significant others," reported Pawelski.

He added that some were local residents but many traveled long distances, coming as far away as Albany and western New York, central Pennsylvania and North Carolina.

A highlight of the dinner was the attendance of eight former teachers and their spouses including John and Judy Mottolla, Tom and Shirley Coughlin, Lynn and John Harter and John and Dottie Kimiecik.

All except John Harter had some teaching related role at one time during their school days in the Florida Union Free School District system.

The reunion events concluded with many attending The Florida Family Fun Fest. And the group has decided to keep the Facebook page active and hold yearly informal gatherings and five-year reunions.

"And hopefully next time," said Pawelski, "we can celebrate in the soon to be opened Black Dirt Brewhouse in the Village of Florida."
