Seaman completes basic training

    Monroe — Navy Seaman Recruit Dennis J. Cooney recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Cooney’s training included classroom study, practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, fire fighting, water safety and survival, shipboard and aircraft safety, and physical fitness. The capstone event of boot camp was “Battle Stations,” which is designed to galvanize the attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork, and endurance, through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of honor, courage and commitment. Cooney, the son of Tosca and Patrick Cooney of Monroe, is a 2004 graduate of Monroe-Woodbury High School in Central Valley.
