WARWICK — The theme for National Nursing Home Week, from May 14 to 20, is “Legends in Our Own Time.” The purpose is to remind the community of a bygone era, and the extraordinary talents of many of the residents of nursing facilities throughout the country. Kari Call, director of recreation at the skilled nursing facility Schervier Pavilion in Warwick, planned a series of events for the residents to celebrate the week. “Since National Nursing Home Week began on Mother’s Day this year,” said Call, a certified therapy recreation specialist, “I scheduled a Mother’s Day Social, and ordered corsages for all the ladies.” Other events included a day trip and luncheon at Charlie Brown’s Restaurant in Middletown, several social get-togethers, visits by singers and musicians, and a professional cooking demonstration. Such events are not out of the ordinary for the residents. “We publish a calendar every month that’s filled with interesting and entertaining things to do throughout the day, as well as some evenings,” said Call. National Nursing Home Week was established in 1967 by the American Health Care Association to honor those who promote quality of care at nursing home facilities, including residents, family members, volunteers, community, and staff. Leah Cerkvenik, executive director and administrator of St. Anthony Community Hospital, added, “The week is an opportunity to thank all those who provide dedicated and compassionate service for our most vulnerable seniors and persons with disabilities.” Schervier Pavilion, a 120-bed skilled nursing facility licensed by the New York State Department of Health, is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation. The center offers therapeutic recreational programs designed to respond to each resident’s physical, emotional and spiritual needs, along with long term care services such as intravenous therapy, rehabilitation therapy, and wound care.
