William J. Tully

William J. Tully, a longtime resident of Chester and former town supervisor, died peacefully at Glen Arden Retirement Community on Sunday, December 30, 2018.
The son of William T. Tully and Kate Tully, Bill was born in Manhattan in 1940.
Bill was a devoted husband to Barbara Tully for 43 years and missed her terribly every day since her passing in 2010.
He was a loving father to son William T. Tully (wife, Cindy) of Mt. Kisco, daughter Kathleen Higgins (husband, James) of Goshen, son Kevin V. Tully (wife, Leigh Ann) of Warwick, and son Michael J. Tully (wife, Kelly) of Pearl River. Bill was also the proud grandpa to Brendan and Liam Higgins of Goshen, Patrick and Riley Tully of Warwick and Maeve and Eilish Tully of Pearl River.
Bill retired as a lieutenant from the Fire Department of the City of New York after 27 years of service.
He went on to have a distinguished career in local government, serving as a member of the Town of Chester Town Board and later two terms as the Supervisor of the Town of Chester. He also served as the head of the town’s Republican committee and was a county chairperson.
Bill was also a gifted carpenter and ran a successful area contracting business for more than 20 years.
He enjoyed spending time with friends and family. He was an avid skier in the winter and loved kayaking and cycling in warmer months.
None of those interests, though, took precedence over watching his grandchildren compete in sports. He traveled extensively up and down the East Coast to watch them play and most weekends would be found on the sidelines of a soccer or lacrosse field or in the stands at a track meet with tears of pride in his eyes.
Visitation was held Jan. 2 and Jan. 3 at Flynn Funeral and Cremation Centers, located at 139 Stage Road, Monroe.
A Funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m., on Friday, Jan. 4, at St. Columba R.C. Church, 29 High St. Chester. Fr. John Bonnici will be the celebrant.
Burial will follow at St. Columba R.C. Parish Cemetery, Route 94, Chester.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Arthur C. Luf Chiildren’s Burn Camp (ctburnsfoundation.org) 601 Boston Post Road, Milford, CT 06460.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Thomas F. Flynn, and Brendan T. Flynn, Licensed Funeral Directors, of Flynn Funeral & Cremation Memorial Centers, Inc. For directions to the funeral home or to offer an online memorial please visit www.flynnfh.com.
