Mary Grindrod Reid

Mary Grindrod Reid died peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2018, at Woodland Pond in New Paltz. She was 94.
Mary was born Feb. 16, 1924, in Philadelphia, Pa., the daughter of Irvin S. and Estelle Illensworth Grindrod.
She moved to New Paltz in 1939, graduated from New Paltz High School in 1941, and SUNY New Paltz in 1945.
Mary married Robert Reid on Aug. 2, 1945. Together they owned and operated Reid’s Heating Service until 1981.
Mary was a teacher and was active in many organizations, including the American Association of University Women, New Paltz Garden Club, Elting Memorial Library Association, Woodstock Guild of Craftsmen, the Woodstock Weavers and the Handweavers Guild of America.
She was also a member of the New Paltz Village Planning Board.
She served as a deacon, elder and Sunday school teacher for the Reformed Church of New Paltz and as a member of the Mid Hudson Classis.
Gov. Nelson Rockefeller appointed Mary to the SUNY New Paltz College Council in 1973, where she served for 10 years.
Mary is survived by her daughter Molly Reid and son-in-law David Stanhewicz, her granddaughter Anna Stanhewicz and husband Scott Rager, her granddaughter Laura Stanhewicz and fiancé Jesse Manley, her older sister, Ruth Moyer, who lives in Missouri, and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband of fifty years, Robert Reid, in 1996, and their son, Robert Andrew (Andy) Reid in 1975.
Mary leaves behind many dear friends and sisters in PEO and Clio sorority.
She brought her artistic talents and creativity to all her endeavors. Her sense of humor, quick wit and loving heart will be missed by all.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Reformed Church of New Paltz with the Rev. Mark Mast officiating.
