Kathryn "Katie" Julia Bollenbach, a longtime Warwick resident, passed peacefully at Stamford Hospital, Conn., on Sunday. Oct. 29, 2017, into the loving hands of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. She was 95 years of age and had been living in the state of Connecticut for the past four years.
Born on June 22, 1922, in Hamburg, N.J., she was the daughter of James and Julia Savchuk, also past residents of Warwick.
Her late husband of forty-seven years, William Bollenbach Sr., and she started and cherished a thriving dairy farm of registered Holsteins in Warwick which they diligently worked together to mark their legacy.
Kathryn was a professional registered nurse as a 1944 graduate of St. Luke's School of Nursing in Newburgh. As a nurse, she worked in many departments and capacities, including but not limited to surgical, general and private duty, pediatrics and ER.
She started her career in New York City Doctor's Hospital and worked at St. Anthony Community Hospital, as well as other local Orange County hospitals.
She helped pioneer the Warwick Ambulance Corps as an active medical attendant and registered nurse, taking calls as needed.
Kathryn loved her farm, animals, the birds and plants. Kathryn truly had a green thumb and produced healthy large gardens yearly. She worked on the farm, intricately involved for many years, cultivating the soil and fulfilling chores and farm tasks as a farmer's wife. She cooked many meals for farm hired labor. Working as a nurse and care of her farm was her passion. She was involved with local agricultural organizational activities.
Kathryn also was quite a Warwick historian buff. Neighbors and others enjoyed listening to Kathryn's recall of family trees/residents, places and occurrences.
Kathryn was a socially pleasant conversationalist who when she smiled, her whole face smiled gleefully and warmly. Kathryn had a way of making others smile back in this way. She will be deeply and dearly missed.
Kathryn leaves behind three surviving children, Julie Suarez-Bollenbach of Cos Cob, Conn., William Bollenbach Jr., Pine Island, and Richard Bollenbach, Marshall, Texas; and six grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her brothers, Andrew Savchuk and Michael Savchuk.
Visitation was held Nov. 2 at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home in Warwick.
Funeral service were held Nov. 3 at the funeral home, followed by interment in Warwick Cemetery.
