Jeanne H. Stage died peacefully on Thursday, July 25, 2013, at home in South Orleans, Mass., surrounded by her family.

She was born in New York City in 1923; spent her childhood in Warwick, where she married John L. Stage; raised her daughters in Pleasantville; and lived for the last 40 years on Cape Cod.

After graduating from Warwick Valley High School, she received a scholarship to Barnard College. She attended Barnard for one year and then decided to become a cadet nurse during World War II at Mountainside Hospital in Montclair, N. J. Nursing took her to Santa Barbara, California, then to hospital work and a school nurse job in Pleasantville. She became a camp nurse at Quanset Sailing Camps and later the town nurse for Eastham. Her final position was ten years as director of the Council on Aging in Orleans.

Besides being a compassionate and efficient nurse, Jeanne was an avid walker and gardener, huge sports fan, loved animals and the outdoors. She had a special talent for friendship, making and keeping lifelong connections, as well as readily making new friends. Jeanne had a strong spirit, a courageous soul and a wonderful sense of humor. She was loved far and wide.

Jeanne is survived by her daughters Audrey Stage and her partner Wayne Davis of Orleans, Mass., and Margot Stage and her husband David Crane of Westford, Mass.; her grandchildren Nicholas Stage Sireci and his wife Megan of Waltham, Mass., Trevor Stage of Denver, Colorado, and Chelsea Stage and her partner Joe Putney of Boston.

A memorial service will be held at Nickerson Funeral Home in Orleans on Sunday, Aug. 4. Her ashes will be buried in the Warwick Cemetery in a private ceremony.

Donations in Jeanne’s memory may be made to VNA Hospice or to the Orleans Council on Aging.
