Herbert William Weber

“Only good things happen to me.”

This was Herb Weber’s favorite expression and the mantra he lived by.

He was born in Germany on Oct. 3, 1924, son of Ida and Rudolph Weber. His parents emigrated to the U.S. with their young family in 1927, settling first in the Bronx and later in Lake Peekskill.

Herb proudly served his country as a Marine in World War II, earning a Purple Heart.

After the war, he married Helen Scheuerman and lived at Camp Shanks in Orangeburg, working for the Bendix Corp. until the early 1960’s.

He moved with his family to East Herkimer and later Saratoga Springs, where he was a salesman of juke boxes, laundromat equipment and agricultural tools for Vermeer Corp.

From the early 1980’s until the mid 1990’s, Herb was superintendent of an apartment complex in Wilton.

He started working with herbs, becoming known as an herbalist in both the Saratoga area and in Lilydale. Over the years, Herb also opened his heart and home to a series of orange tabby cats, all inexplicably named Sam.

Herb died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012.

He is survived by his sons William Weber of Reno, Nevada; Richard and daughter-in-law Debra of Florida, N.Y.; daughter Susan and son-in-law Randall Suffolk of Tulsa, Oklahoma; grandchildren Natalia and Jacob Weber and Piper Suffolk.

He is also survived by his former wife, Helen, and her husband, Sid Gordon of Saratoga Springs; niece Amy and her husband Bruce Man; grandnephew Matthew and grandniece Christina Mann of Sparrowbush.

He was predeceased by his sister Ursula and brother-in-law John Poborsky and nephews Thomas and John Poborsky Jr.

Herb also leaves behind many friends he met along his journey and is certain to meet up with those who left before him.

Special thanks to his excellent caregivers at the Couser Pavillion of Valley View Nursing Facility in Goshen and Orange Regional Medical Center for making these last few difficult years as comfortable as possible for him.

There will be no visitation. As per Herb’s wishes, he will be cremated and his ashes scattered in beautiful places.

So, who knows? You may be hearing from him sooner than you think.

If you feel moved to do so, please make a donation in Herb’s honor to the Salvation Army or a humane society near you. Cheers!
