Hella Sousa

    Hella Sousa, a former resident of Goshen, Newburgh and Mt. Vernon, passed away Wednesday, June 21, 2017, at Schervier Pavilion in Warwick. She was 97 years old.
    Born on May 28, 1920 in Oldenburg, Germany, she was the daughter of Hermann and Henrietta Schachtebeck.
    She was the widow of Albano Sousa.
    A homemaker, Hella was a talented musician, playing the harmonica and accordion.
    She is survived by her daughter Baerbel “Barbara” Brandao of New York City; a son, Willi Willms and his wife Eileen of Brooksville, Fla.; and a daughter, Monika Mohrmann and husband Werner in Germany; step-daughters Renate Heinz, Ingrid Scholz and Gunda Kirsch in Germany; six grandchildren and four step-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren..
    Memorial visitation was held June 24 at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home in Warwick.
    A funeral service followed.
    In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Hella’s name may be made to Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties, 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, NY 12550.
