George H. Markt Jr.

George H. Markt Jr. died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. He was 85.
Born in Norwood, Mass., on Aug. 24, 1928, he was the son of George H. and Delia A. (Lydon) Markt.
He graduated from Sharon High School with the class of 1946 and stayed active with all of his class reunions.
George proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was discharged in 1953 as a corporal.
In 1979, George earned his associates degree from Massasoit Community College. He has been a resident of Plainville, Mass., for the past 10 years, moving from Sharon, where he lived for 75 years.
George began his career as a call fireman for the Sharon Fire Department before becoming a police officer.
He continued to serve the Town of Sharon on the Police Department for 27 years, retiring in 1985 as a sergeant.
After his retirement, George remained active with the department as a Special Police Officer for many years. In addition, he was the owner and operator of George H. Markt & Sons Oil Company, Inc. for over 30 years.
Affectionately known as “Bumpa,” he was a member of the Sharon Historical Society, VFW Post 7238, and was elected to the Sharon High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He also volunteered his time assisting with the elections in Sharon and for Meals on Wheels for 27 years.
Most of all, George was a devoted husband and family man who especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and going to all of their events.

Loving father of George and his wife Denise of Warwick, Mary A. Alioto and her husband Paul of Norton, Mass., Joseph T. Markt and his wife Christine of Sharon, Mass., Carol A. Gannon and her husband Steven of Norton, Mass., David F. Markt and his wife Elizabeth of Melrose, Mass., and Catherine P. Earley and her husband Timothy of Sharon, Mass.
Cherished grandfather of Morgan Markt, George and Brooke Markt, Allison and Brittany Alioto, Brian and Danny Gannon, Leah and Cameron Markt and Kevin and Julia Earley.
Brother of the late Thomas J. Markt.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend George’s Life Celebration on Friday, Dec. 27, 2 from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 28, from 9 to 9:30 a.m. in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home, 48 Common St., Walpole, Mass.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 59 Cottage St., Sharon, Mass., on Saturday, Dec. 28, at 10 a.m.
Interment will be in Knollwood Memorial Park.
