George A. Filipowski

    George A. Filipowski, a lifelong Warwickian, passed away, surrounded by his family, on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013, at Orange Regional Medical Center in the Town of Wallkill. He was 83 years old.

    Born Nov. 26, 1930, in Warwick, he was the son of Adam and Helen (Baranowski) Filipowski.

    He was the widower of Dorothy Ann (Schlagel) Filipowski. They had been married for 49 years.

    An Air Force veteran of the Korean War, he was a member of the Polish Legion of American Veterans in Pine Island and was proud of his Polish heritage.

    He was retired as assistant postmaster SPO (Supervisor of Postal Operations) with the Warwick Post Office.

    An original member of Warwick Fire Department Engine #3, he was a member of the Pine Island Seniors, the Elks Lodge #1097 in Middletown and the Rinky Dinks Sportsmen’s Club of Pine Island.

    “Pops” was an avid master woodcarver and he was a member of the Treasure Coast Woodcarvers in Jensen Beach, Fla. He could build anything and fix what was broke, including cars, houses and boats. He was also a proud and devoted grandfather and an avid fisherman and fascinating storyteller.

    He is survived by his two sons: Tab Filipowski and his wife Beth of Warwick and Jeffrey Filipowski and his wife Donna of Warwick, and his two grandsons, Tyler and Connor Filipowski; also survived by nieces and nephews.

    He was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Edward.

    Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, at the Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Ave., Warwick, followed by interment in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
