Francis Edward Scharfenberger

Francis Edward Scharfenberger of Warwick, formerly of Manchester, N.J., and Ridgewood, entered into rest on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2019, at Schervier Pavilion. He was 95 years of age.
Born on Feb. 15, 1923, in Ridgewood, Francis was the youngest son of Edward J. and Elizabeth (Jeckel) Scharfenberger.
Francis (Uncle Frank) was working his father’s family business, the Ecclesiastical Art Company in Manhattan, when he was drafted into service in 1942. He was involved with a later phase of Operation Overlord, commonly known as D-Day, and sustained a serious head wound while on maneuvers.
His older brother, Edward, a lieutenant and paratrooper also serving in France, miraculously located his injured brother and transferred him to an officer’s hospital where he recuperated.
Now a corporal, Frank completed his service as an MP in Germany before returning to the States. He earned a Purple Heart as well as many other medals and citations.
After his father passed away and the business closed, Frank worked at Lieber & Co. brokerage firm in Harrison before retiring. He moved to Manchester, N.J., then to Warwick, where he lived near family.
Affectionately known as Uncle Frank by even non-family members, he most enjoyed his mealtimes, watching old John Wayne movies and being in the company of extended family.
He was a faithful member of St. Stephen Parish and was especially proud of his nephew, Edward, who was ordained Bishop of Albany in 2014.
Our uncle had a generous heart and a wicked sense of humor and left us with memorable expressions and stories we will never forget. He will be greatly missed.
Frank is survived by his family, comprised of his much-loved sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, their spouses, their children and several dear cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Edward and Joseph and his grand-nephew, Jonathan.
We especially want to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at St. Anthony Community Hospital, Mt. Alverno and Schervier Pavilion for the highly skilled and compassionate care they provided and to Dr. Mayank Shah, for his kind, professional care.
The family received friends on Feb. 16 at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home in Warwick.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated after the visitation at St. Stephen the First Martyr Church, officiated by Bishop Edward Scharfenberger.
Interment followed the mass at St. Stephen Cemetery in Warwick.
