Dona L. Weyant

Dona L. Weyant passed away peacefully Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2018, at her home in Highland Mills. She was 74 years old.
Daughter of Frances Nydam Elliot, she was born Jan. 7, 1944, in Newburgh. Dona was the widow of Richard F. Weyant.
Dona’s love of books and devotion to helping others led to a 40 year career as a library clerk with Pine Tree Elementary School in Monroe, positions as employee, trustee and past president of the Rushmore Memorial Library in Highland Mills and her work as a Literacy Volunteer. She was known for her everchanging collection of reading materials and no child ever left her home without a new book.
She was an active member of the Woodbury Historical Society since 1985 and could often be seen happily planting and weeding in front of the Rushmore Building.
Dona enjoyed gardening and had an extensive knowledge of plants, especially those native to our area. She was also a member of the N.Y.S. United Teachers Association.
An avid animal lover, Dona shared her home with many rescue pets and often referred to her home as “Animal House.” She supported the Warwick Valley Humane Society and the ASPCA.
Dona will be remembered for her gentle kindness and selfless generosity.
Survivors include her brothers William Elliot of Harriman and Thomas Elliot of Loveland, Colorado; her sisters Patricia Lukas and husband Donald of Hawley, Pa., and Linda Rudd and husband Gary of Buena Vista, Colorado; her step-daughter Michelle Weyant of Highland Falls; her nephews Rick Young and Robb Young and wife Dawn; and nieces Suzzanah Elliot and Colleen Nazario and husband Miguel.
Funeral Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. A memorial celebration of her life will be held in the spring.
