    Betty J. Van Tassel, 74, of Hardyston died peacefully on June 12, 2013 at Barn Hill Care Center in Newton.

    Born in Warwick, N.Y. she was the daughter of the late Emmett N. and Eva May (Decker) Cooper, Sr. Betty has been a longtime resident of Sussex County.

    For 28 years she was employed as a senior secretary in the guidance office at Wallkill Valley Regional High School in Hardyston, retiring from that position in 2010. When not working and caring for her family she was a faithful follower of the New York Yankees, the New York Giants and Notre Dame Football. She was a graduate of Warwick High School Class of 1957. She was also a longtime member of the Franklin First Presbyterian Church.

    In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her brothers, John and Emmett Cooper, Jr. and a sister Dorothy Couser.

    She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years Miles T. Van Tassel, Jr. of Hardyston; a son Miles Van Tassel III and his wife Laurie of Vernon; daughters Lori Van Tassel and her fiancé Wayne of Wantage, and Susan Olsen and her husband James of Lafayette; grandchildren Alyssa and Erin Van Tassel and Taylor and Ryan Olsen; and sisters, Christine Cooper of Goshen, N.Y., Shirley Cooper of Warwick, N.Y. and Ethel Brischler of Tennessee.

    Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral 10 a.m. on Tuesday June 18 at the F. John Ramsey Funeral Home, One Main St., Franklin. Interment to follow at North Hardyston Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday, June 17 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
