Anthony Costando

Anthony Costando of the Village of Florida entered into rest on Saturday, June 9, 2012, in his home surrounded by his loved ones. He was 84 years old.

The son of Dominick Costando and Teresa Sinocchi Costando, he was born Jan. 14, 1928, in the Bronx, where he lived for 64 years before relocating to Florida, N.Y.

Anthony was raised by his hard-working, widowed father and two loving and doting sisters, Amelia and Louise, after his mother died when he was just 10 years of age. In order to help support his family he entered the work force at the age of 10. Throughout his lifetime he held various occupations, but most particularly as a bus driver for the Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority (MaBSTO) of New York City. He retired after 20 years of service.

Anthony also served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a loving and devoted father, grandfather and companion. Anthony had a passion for life and led a very active lifestyle. He enjoyed numerous hobbies, which included photography, videography, card playing, listening and dancing to all kinds of music, especially Big Band and jazz.

He was also a Civil War enthusiast, reading and collecting information on the subject.

Anthony loved all animals, especially his German Shepherd dogs.

All who knew and loved him will miss his infectious laugh, humble nature and vibrant presence.

Survivors include his companion Rocchina Salerno and his children: Teresa Grimando (husband Anthony) of New Jersey and Antoinette Quinn (husband John) of Warwick; grandchildren: John Quinn (wife Nancy) and their two children Gabrielle and Scott; Antoinette T. Quinn and Desiree Grimando; sister Louise Isabella of Peekskill; and several nieces and nephews. He also is survived by his childhood best friend, Ernest Tricomi.

He was predeceased by his wife of 33 years, Antoinette Costando; his grandson Anthony C. Quinn and his sister Amelia Costando.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 12, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the T.S. Purta Funeral Home, 22 Glenmere Ave., Florida, NY 10921.

A funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 13, at St. Stephen’s Church, 75 Sanfordville Road, Warwick.

Burial will be in St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery in Mount Kisco.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable to CFOC - Anthony C. Quinn Memorial Fund, and sent to the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan, 30 Scott’s Corners Drive, Suite 202, Montgomery, NY 12549.
