Monroe K of C crowns free throw champs

Monroe - Twenty-two boys and girls from the Monroe area were named local champions of the 2008 Knights of Columbus free throw championship and have earned the right to compete at the district level. Monroe Council 2079 sponsored the local competition and the Sacred Heart School gymnasium. All youngsters ages 10 to 14 were eligible to participate. The winners are: Kate Donnellan was the 10-year-old girls’ champion and Jason Zambrzycki was the winner of the 10-year-old boys’ division. In the 11-year-old bracket, Tim Marcotte and Casey Riordan were the champions. Kevin Zambrzycki captured the title for the 12-year-old boys’ division. Maxine Storms came out victorious in the 13-year-old girls’ division. The fourteen year old champions were Ken Tobey in the boys’ bracket and Hannah Brass in the girls. There were no contestants for the girls 12-year-old or boys 13-year-old brackets. Each contestant was allowed 15 free-throw attempts in the contests. Ties were settled by successive rounds of five free throws per contestant until a winner emerged. Each of these winners then competed in the district competition held on Feb. 1 at the Sacred Heart School gymnasium. Donnellan, Kevin Zambrzycki, Marcotte, Riordan, Storms and Tobey captured the title in their age category with an eye toward moving on to the chapter, regional and state levels. Monroe Council 2079 sponsors this event every January.
