Warwick resident Benjamin J. Pearce, 17, has been selected by the American Legion Post 214 in Warwick to participate in Boys State this summer at Morrisville State College. Boys State is a program in which participants learn about government by becoming a virtual government. The nationwide program provides the experience, opportunity and organization to teach young men citizenship and workings of the government. Participants are from various high schools throughout New York state and rank at the top of their classes. They were nominated by their high schools and sponsored by their local legions. During the program, participants will practice military drills, participate in legislative sessions, plan which bills they will introduce and support when the Boys State legislature convenes, and learn about county caucuses and state party conventions. Walter Parkinson, post commander, said he believes the program is a worthwhile and exposes participants to the rights, privileges and responsibilities afforded by the U.S. Constitution. In eighth grade, Pearce was awarded the American Legion Citizenship Award, presented by Post 214 for community service, academic achievement, and excellence in school events, sports, government and clubs.
