— The secret to a long and happy marriage, explained Lucy Fischetti, is simply to "weather the storm and keep your faith."
On Wednesday, Oct. 17, she and her husband Jerry, who is about to turn 90, celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary in the company of their many friends and club members at the Warwick Senior Center, adjacent to the Town Hall on Kings Highway.
The Fischettis, who have lived in Warwick since 1968 and attend the Church of St. Stephen, the First Martyr, met at Our Lady of Peace R.C. Church in Brooklyn. They were married there in 1954.
Lucy Fischetti was born and raised in Brooklyn but her husband, Jerry, came from a community near Naples, Italy, and had immigrated to the United States as a teenager in 1947.
He explained that he became a skilled tool and die maker and the couple decided to move to this area because he was managing a machine shop in Chester at that time.
The couple raised three sons in Warwick and can now boast about their four grandchildren, three girls and one boy.
In addition to being active members of the Warwick Valley Seniors Club, Jerry and Lucy Fischetti have both served as volunteers at St. Anthony Community Hospital for the past 17 years.
During the celebration, the couple cut a special anniversary cake featuring a photograph taken on their wedding day 64 years ago.
Marie Sisti, president of the club, suggests joining and becoming an active member of her organization may have something to do with good health and longevity.
The only requirement for membership in The Warwick Valley Seniors Club is that you must be age 60 or over.
"I would like to thank Mary and our Vice President Brenda Van Orden and everyone else who worked so hard to arrange this celebration," said Lucy Fischetti. "We decided now was a good time to celebrate our anniversary with the people we've been spending time with all these years."
